In 1995, Dr. Liotta was an important early contributor to Triangle Pharmaceuticals in North Carolina, which developed anti-AIDS compounds. He served as Vice President of Research at Emory University oversaw all of its technology development initiatives. He was responsible for the discovery of the breakthrough HIV drugs 3TC and FTC, which are part of the majority of AIDS combination therapies used today. He has been Director, Drug Discovery Program of Winship Cancer Center since 1994. Dr. Liotta is a renowned organic and medicinal chemist. He has had tremendous success in the development of clinically useful antiviral drugs. These include emtricitabine (Emtriva, Gilead), registered as a component of combination therapy for HIV and as one component of a fixed-dose two drug combination pill, Truvada and the new 3-in-1 pill Atripla (co-marketed by Gilead and BMS). His discoveries also include lamivudine (Epivir, GlaxoSmithKline), which was approved for treatment of both HIV and Hepatitis B virus infection, and D-D4FC/DPC 817 (Reverset, Pharmasset). He was a Co-chairman of National Science Foundation Workshop on Reactive Intermediates from 1980 to 1983 and Co-chairman of Gulf Coast Chemistry Conference since 1981. He worked at AIDS Study Section, National Institutes of Health from 1995 to 1998. He served as Consultant at several pharmaceutical companies, including Triangle Pharmaceutical, Pharmasset, Atherogenics and also worked at the R.W. Johnson Pharmaceutical Research Institute. He serves as a Member of Scientific Advisory Board at Cerecor, Inc. He waa Scientific Member of Pharmasset. He has received many academic and professional honors and awards, and has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles. Along with two Emory University colleagues, Dr. Liotta discovered (lamivudine) 3TC and (emtricitabine) FTC, part of the anti-HIV “cocktail“. He has discovered crucial HIV-fighting drugs, founded several drug discovery companies, and been recognized as a seminal contributor to medicinal chemistry. While at Emory, he has authored more than two hundred research publications and patents. Dr. Liotta received the Biomedical Industry Growth Award from the Georgia Biomedical Partnership in 2003. He was a fellow of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation from 1980 to 1984. He was the recipient of a Camille and Henry Dreyfus Teacher Scholar Fellowship and won an Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award from 1994 to 1996. Dr. Liotta holds a BA degree from Queens College in 1970 and his PhD in Organic Chemistry in 1974 from The City University of New York and completed his post-doctoral training at The Ohio State University from 1974 to 1976.
