Dr. Jean-Pierre Garnier, Ph.D. serves as an Operating Partner of Advent International Corporation. Dr. Garnier served as the Chief Executive Officer of GlaxoSmithKline Plc from May 23, 2000 to May 2008 and served as its Chief Accounting Officer. He assumed this role in January 2001 with the merger of SmithKline Beecham and Glaxo Wellcome. He served as the Chief Executive Officer of Pierre Fabre Group from October 2008 to September 2010. He joined SmithKline Beecham in 1990 as the President of its pharmaceutical business in North America and served as the Chairman, Pharmaceuticals since 1994 until his appointment as the Chief Operating Officer in 1995. Dr. Garnier served as the President of Schering-Plough's US business. During his 15 years at Schering, he held various management positions, including General Manager of several overseas subsidiaries. In 1983, Dr. Garnier joined the US Pharmaceutical Products Division serving as the Vice President of Marketing. He was then named the Senior Vice President and General Manager of the OTC business and assumed responsibility for sales and marketing for the U.S. prescription business prior to becoming President. Dr. Garnier has been a major figure in the pharmaceutical industry for more than 30 years. Dr. Garnier serves as the Chairman of Actelion Pharmaceuticals Ltd. and NormOxys, Inc. He has been an Executive Director of GlaxoSmithKline PLC since 1992 and serves as a Member of the Corporate Administration & Transactions and Financial Results Committees. He serves as a Member of Advisory board of Dubai International Capital. He has been the Chairman of Actelion Ltd. since September 27, 2011 and has been a Director of United Technologies Corp. since 1997. He has been an Independent Director of Renault SA since April 2008. He serves on the Boards of Directors of the Eisenhower Exchange Fellowships Inc. and INSEAD and on the Advisory Board of Quaker BioVentures. He also serves on the Stanford University Advisory Council on Interdisciplinary Biosciences. Dr. Garnier serves on the board of Cerenis Therapeutics SA. In January 1997, he was selected by President Chirac of France to receive the Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur. He served as a Director of SmithKline Beecham Limited. In April 1997, Dr. Garnier received from the Cancer Research Institute the Oliver R Grace Award for Distinguished Service in Advancing Cancer Research. In 2001, he was named one of 50 ‘Stars of Europe’ by BusinessWeek magazine and presented with the Marco Polo Award for GlaxoSmithKline's commitments to China. In 2002, Dr. Garnier received the Humanitarian Award from the Sabin Vaccine Institute and the Legend Lifetime Achievement Award from the Eastern Technology Council. In March 2002, he was honoured with the Fulbright Association's Lifetime Achievement Medal. He holds a Ph.D. in Pharmacology and an M.S. in Pharmaceutical Science from the University of Louis Pasteur in France. As a Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Garnier earned an MBA at Stanford University, California, in 1974.
