Background

Dr. Richard J. Markham has been a Partner of Care Capital, LLC since November 2004. Mr. Markham served as the Chief Operating Officer and Vice Chairman of the Management Board of Aventis from May 2002 until August 2004 and Chief Executive Officer at Aventis Pharma from December 1999 to May 2002. Previously, he served as the President, Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, and Director of Hoechst Marion Roussel Inc. He also served as the President, Chief Operating ... Officer, and Director of Marion Merrell Dow Inc. since January 1994. From 1973 to 1993, Dr. Markham was associated with Merck & Co., Inc., and served as its President and Chief Operating Officer from January 1993 to July 1993. Prior to this role, he held a number of positions, starting as a professional representative and then becoming a District Manager, Product Manager and Director, Executive Director, and then Vice President of Marketing for the Merck Sharp & Dohme Division. He was responsible for Merck’s European pharmaceutical business before serving as a Senior Vice President at Merck & Co., from 1991 to 1992 and the President of the Merck Human Health Division, where he was responsible for worldwide marketing and sales of Merck’s pharmaceutical products. He has been Chairman of t`he Board of Acura Pharmaceuticals Inc. since 2006. He has been a Director of Acura Pharmaceuticals Inc. since 2006. He also served as a Director of Aventis Behring LLC. Currently, Dr. Markham serves as a Director of Vaxart, Inc., and CoLucid Pharmaceuticals, Inc. He served as the Non-Executive Chairman of Acura Pharmaceuticals, Inc. from February 2008 to March 11, 2013 and served as its Director from May 2006 to March 11, 2013. He served as a Director of Anacor Pharmaceuticals, Inc., from 2005 to February 29, 2012. He served as a Director of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers Association from 1991 to 1993. He has served as a Member of the Board of Trustee of the Health Care Institute of New Jersey and on the Boards of Directors of Commerce Bank of Kansas City and Aventis Pasteur. Dr. Markham has also been awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree. He holds a B.S. in Pharmacy and Pharmacal Sciences from Purdue University and has served as a Member of the Dean’s Advisory Council of the university since 1989.
