Background

Jonathan R. Cole serves as the Provost and Dean Emeritus and John Mitchell Mason Professor at Columbia University. Prof. Cole serves as the Chairman of Center For Advanced Study In The Behavioral Sciences, Inc. He has been teaching at Columbia University since 1969, was the Provost and Dean of Faculties at Columbia from 1989 to 2003 and currently is the John Mitchell Mason Professor of the University. Professor Cole served as Director of the Center for the Social Sciences ... from 1979 to 1987 and Vice President of Arts and Sciences from 1987 to 1989. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1975-76, a Russell Sage Foundation Fellowship in 1986-87 and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was elected a member of the Council of Foreign Relations and the American Philosophical Society. He has published extensively on historical and social aspects of science and has been a leading international contributor to understanding opportunities, challenges and obstacles facing women in the scientific community. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees at Boston University; the JED Foundation; and the Urban Justice Center.
