He served as Member of Advisory Board at Vast Exploration Inc. from September 2010 to September 18, 2012 and served as its Director from February 18, 2011 to September 18, 2012. During his career, he commanded units at every level, serving in the combat zones of Grenada, Lebanon, Kurdistan, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. He served on the Joint Staff three times, the last as Director. He also served as Executive Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Director of Strategic Plans and Policy on the Joint Staff and Director of the Joint Staff. He also served as Director of Strategic Plans and Policy (J5) on the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Director of the Joint Staff. Previously, Mr. Abizaid commanded the 1st Infantry Division, which provided the first ground forces into Kosovo. He is recognized as one of the most knowledgeable Americans on the Middle East/Gulf region and is highly respected by the region s leaders. He was the 66th Commandant of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. His education includes a U.S. Army War College Senior Fellowship at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, works with the Preventative Defense Project at Stanford and Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. He has been awarded the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Army Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star. He started his career with the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he served as a rifle and scout platoon leader. He commanded companies in the 2nd and 1st Ranger Battalions, leading a Ranger Rifle Company during the invasion of Grenada.General Abizaid commanded the 3rd Battalion, 325th Airborne Battalion combat Team in Vicenza, Italy, during the Gulf crisis and deployed with the battalion to Kurdistan in Northern Iraq. His brigade command was the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division. He served as the Assistant Division Commander, 1st Armored Division, in Bosnia-Herzegovina. He served as the 66th Commandant at West Point. Later, he commanded 1st Infantry Division, the Big Red One, in Wurzburg, which provided the first U.S. ground forces into Kosovo. He served as the Deputy Commander (Forward), Combined Forces Command, U.S. Central Command during Operation Iraqi Freedom. His military education includes Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced courses, Armed Forces Staff College, and a U.S. Army War College Senior Fellowship at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. He earned the Combat Infantryman s Badge, Master Parachutist Badge with Gold Star, Ranger Tab and the Expert Infantryman's Badge. Mr. Abizaid holds M.Sc. in Civil Engineering from University of California Berkeley. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy with a B.S. degree in 1973. His civilian studies include an Olmsted Scholarship at the University of Jordan, Amman and Master Degree in Middle Eastern studies at Harvard University and graduate of Marketing Management Course for Senior Executives from Stanford Business School.
