Background
Prof. Joseph E. Stiglitz is University Professor at Columbia University. He was also a Professor of Economics at Stanford University. Dr. Stiglitz is the Chair of Columbia University's Committee on Global Thought, and Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Initiative for Policy Dialogue. Professor Stiglitz served as the World Bank's Senior Vice President for Development Economics and Chief Economist from 1997 to 1999. During his time at the World Bank, he was heavily
... involved in helping the Bank transform itself into a “Knowledge Bank,“ emphasizing the key role that knowledge plays in promoting economic growth and alleviating poverty. Professor Stiglitz was also a leading participant in the international debate on redesigning the global financial architecture, where he focused on reducing the vulnerability of developing countries to devastating financial shocks. Prior to his time at the World Bank, he served as a member and then as the Chairman of President Clinton's Council of Economic Advisers. Professor Stiglitz was a leader in the Clinton Administration's “reinventing government“ efforts, where he worked on proposals for pension simplification, the introduction of new treasury securities (indexed bonds), and reform of telecommunications, banking, and environmental regulations. From 1979 to 1988, he was a Professor of Economics at Princeton University. He was first appointed Professor of Economics at Yale University in 1969 at the age of 26, and he has also held the Drummond Chair in Political Economy at All Souls College, Oxford. Professor Stiglitz helped create a new branch of economics, “The Economics of Information, “that has been widely applied throughout the economics discipline. He helped pioneer pivotal concepts such as theories of adverse selection and moral hazard, which have now become standard tools of policy analysts as well as economic theorists. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, he helped revive interest in the economics of technological change and other factors contributing to long-run increases in productivity and living standards. Recognized as a leading economic educator and author around the world, Dr. Stiglitz has written numerous books and has taught at Princeton, Stanford, Oxford, MIT and Yale. He founded The Journal of Economic Perspectives, and his 2001 book Globalization and Its Discontents has sold over one million copies worldwide. In 2001, Dr. Stiglitz was awarded the Nobel Prize in economics for his analyses of markets with asymmetric information, and he has pioneered such pivotal concepts as moral hazard and adverse selection. Professor Stiglitz is a Member of Strategic Advisory Board at Cartesian Capital Group, LLC. He is also a Member of the Board of Acumen Fund. He earned his B.A. from Amherst College in 1964, where he now serves as a trustee; his PhD. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1967; and was a Fulbright Scholar and Tapp Junior Research Fellow at Cambridge University in 1970.
