Background

Dr. Margaret B. Wilkerson, Ph.D. serves as Director of Media, Arts and Culture at the Ford Foundation. Dr. Wilkerson is a Professor Emerita at the University of California at Berkeley. She joined the Ford Foundation in 1998 as a Program Officer in Education, Knowledge and Religion. She has been a Professor of African American Studies at the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Wilkerson served as Chair of the Interdisciplinary Graduate Group in Dramatic Art, Chair ... of the Department of African American Studies and Director of the Center for the Study, Education and Advancement of Women. Dr. Wilkerson served as a Consultant of the Ford Foundation’s Worldwide Workshop on Culture in West Africa since January 1995. She taught dramatic literature and performance courses and is the founder of the U.C. Berkeley Black Theater Workshop. She taught a seminar on cultural pluralism at the Lilly Endowment’s workshop on the Liberal Arts for college and university faculty and administrators for 14 years and taught in the Harvard IEM and Management Development Programs for 3 years. She serves as a Member of Executive Committee at Independent Television Service Inc. At Berkeley, Dr. Wilkerson served on the Academic Senate Committee on Admissions and Enrollment; Chair of the U.C. Berkeley Special Action Admissions Committee and Co-chair of the Special Scholarships Committee and served on the Committee on Committees which appoints Members of all Berkeley Senate Committees. She has been a Member of the Executive Council of the American Society for Theatre Research and first Vice President of the Board of Trustees of the San Francisco Theological Seminary. She serves as a Trustee of Mills College and the University of Redlands. Her awards and honors include Fellow of the College of Fellows of the American Theater; the 1996 Career Achievement Award for Outstanding Educator presented by the Association for Theater in Higher Education and Honorary Doctorates of Humane Letters from the University of Redlands and the College of Santa Fe. Dr. Wilkerson has been honored for exemplary academic leadership by the Deans’ Institute of the council of Independent Colleges and was the first recipient of the Black Theater Network’s Winona Lee Fletcher Award for outstanding scholarship. She was awarded a Lifetime Membership by the Black Theater Network in 1998. Dr. Wilkerson has received grants and fellowships from both the Rockefeller (Bellagio Program) and the Ford Foundations (Dissertation and Postdoctoral) to support her research. She holds an MA and Ph.D. in Dramatic Art from University of California Berkeley.
