Background

Thad Cochran is the senior United States Senator from the State of Mississippi. Hon. Cochran served three terms in the House of Representatives before being elected to the Senate in 1978. He is a Director of The National Museum of American History and Smithsonian Institution. He currently serves as Chairman of the Appropriations Committee and as a member of the Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee and the Rules Committee. Senator Cochran has previously served ... as Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, the Agriculture Committee and the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee. He served as a member of the National Education Goals Panel, and authored the Mississippi Wilderness Act, the first federal legislation ever passed for the perpetual protection of lands in the State of Mississippi. He has also influenced the protection of wildlife habitat and helped establish national wildlife refuges as a member of the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission, and authored the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program. During previous Congresses, he has served on the Senate Ethics Committee, the Judiciary Committee, the Labor and Human Resources Committee and the Committee on Indian Affairs.
