Background

Bruce Alberts, Ph.D., served as President of the Councilors at the National Academy of Sciences. Mr. Albert served in biochemistry and molecular biology is widely recognized in the field. Dr. Alberts served as Chair of the National Research Council, an 1,100-employee "operating arm" of the National Academies that conducts independent science, engineering, and health policy studies. Dr. Alberts serves as a Trustee of Carnegie Corp. of New York and Gordon and Betty Moore ... Foundation. He is a Member of four editorial boards of scientific publications, and currently serves on the advisory boards of 24 non-profit institutions. He served as Co-Chair of the Inter Academy Council from 2000 to 2009. He served as a Member of National Academy of Sciences since 1981. He was a Faculty Member in the Department of Chemical Sciences from 1966 to 1971 and the Department of Biochemical Sciences from 1971 to 1976 at Princeton University. Dr. Alberts served as Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco, since 1976. He held the American Cancer Society Lifetime Research Professorship at the university from 1981 to 1985 when he became Chair of the department. He is also one of the Principal Authors of The Molecular Biology of the Cell, now in its third edition and considered one of the preeminent textbooks in the field. He serves as a Trustee of Donald Danforth Plant Science Center. He has earned many honors and awards including 12 honorary degrees. A 1960 graduate of Harvard College, Cambridge, Massachusetts, with a degree in biochemical sciences. Dr. Alberts earned a Ph.D. degree from Harvard University in 1965.
