He served as the President of the Human Genome organization and President of the British Association for Advancement of Science and of Royal Statistical Society and Chancellor of the University of Salford. He has received numerous awards and distinctions and published extensively. He became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1974, a foreign member of the US national Academy of Sciences in 1981 and was knighted in 1986 for his contributions to science. Sir. Bodmer was elected FRS in 1974, Knighted in 1986 for his contributions to science, is a Foreign Associate of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and is the recipient of more than 30 honorary degrees and memberships and fellowships of scientific and medical societies. He studied mathematics at Cambridge University. He completed his Ph.D. working with Sir R. A. Fisher in population genetics. As a post-doctoral fellow at Stanford University, he studied molecular biology.
