He was a Founding Director of the McGovern Institute for Brain Research, Massachusetts Institute of Technology from March 2000 to 2004. Dr. Sharp's research interests have centered on the molecular biology of gene expression relevant to cancer and the mechanisms of RNA splicing. His landmark work in 1977 provided one of the first indications of the startling phenomenon of “discontinuous genes“ in mammalian cells. From 1991 to 1999, Dr. Sharp was Salvador E. Luria Professor and Head of the Department of Biology, Center for Cancer Research, MIT. He served as a Member of Scientific Advisory Committee of Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research Ltd. He has been Institute Professor, Center for Cancer Research, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an academic title position since 1999. Dr. Sharp received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1993, for his work in molecular biology and was a National Medal of Science recipient in 2006. He has authored over 350 scientific papers. Dr. Sharp’s work has earned him numerous cancer research awards and presidential and national scientific board appointments. He is the recipient of the 2004 National Medal of Science and the 2006 inaugural Double Helix Medal from CSHL. Dr. Sharp received a B.A. from Union College in Kentucky and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from University of Illinois.
