Mr. Johnson's practice emphasis includes Europe and Latin America, in addition to the U.S. He has spoken at conferences around the world on topics such as international offerings and has published articles on securities law. He co-edits the chapter on foreign securities offerings in the Aspen Law & Business treatise, Securitization of Financial Assets. Mr. Johnson has worked extensively with Jones Day's European offices on both legal and administrative matters and is proficient in French and Spanish. Mr. Johnson also counsels on matters of ethics, particularly legal ethics, a field in which he is active in speaking and publishing. He has served in the American Bar Association's governing body (the House of Delegates), where in 2000 he was the principal draftsman of a statement of ABA policy on ethics. For this work, Mr. Johnson received the Presidential Commendation of the Illinois State Bar Association. Mr. Johnson also has trial and appellate experience and is a member of the trial bar of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. In court-related matters, he served as chair of the Committee on Judicial Conduct and Ethics of the Special Commission on the Administration of Justice in Cook County, Illinois and as a member of the Illinois Supreme Court Special Commission on the Administration of Justice and of the Criminal Justice Project of the Circuit Court of Cook County. From 2001 to 2003, Mr. Johnson was co-chair of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, a national civil rights organization, and currently is a trustee and a member of its Executive Committee. From 1987 to 1996, he was a member of the board of directors of the Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago, which offers free legal services to the poor. He was President of Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago from 1994 to 1996. He is a member of the Business Law, International Law, and Practice and Dispute Resolution Sections of the American Bar Association. He also is a member of the Section on Business Law and the Committee on Arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution of the International Bar Association. Mr. Johnson is a Life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and is its state chair for Illinois. He was president of the Chicago Council of Lawyers, a bar association in that city, from 1981 to 1983. He is a member of the Radio Committee of WFMT, which oversees Chicago's classical music station.
