Ms. Ellen R. Levine is the Editorial Consultant of Oprah Magazine. Ms. Levine has been Editorial Director of Hearst Magazines at Hearst Corporation since May 2006. In her role, she is responsible for strengthening current titles, developing new titles domestically and internationally, and evaluating opportunities for brand extensions, books, and digital alternatives. She served as an Editor-In-Chief of Good Housekeeping of Hearst Corporation since October 1994. She became
... first female Editor-in-Chief of Good Housekeeping of Magazine's since its founding in 1885. In 2000, Ms. Levine was instrumental in founding the Oprah Magazine. Before her appointment to the top post at Good Housekeeping, the flagship publication of Hearst Magazines, she served as Editor-in-Chief of two other major women's magazines namely Redbook from 1990 to 1994 and Woman's Day from 1982 to 1990 and as a Senior Editor of Cosmopolitan from 1976 to 1982. She began her journalism career at The Record in Hackensack, N.J. While at Woman's Day, Ms. Levine also was senior vice president of Hachette Magazines Inc. She has been an Independent Director at Ryman Hospitality Properties, Inc. (Gaylord Entertainment Co.,) since November 12, 2004. Ms. Levine serves on several Boards in both the corporate and not-for-profit sectors including: the New York Restoration Project, Lifetime Television, and Research! America and New York Women in Communications. She serves as a Member of Advisory Board of Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation and The First Thirty Days, Inc. She served as Director of Finlay Enterprises, Inc., from January 13, 2004 to December 2008 and served as Director of its susidiary Finlay Fine Jewelry Corp. from January 2004 to December 2008. She serves on the Board of the New York Restoration Project and the Board of Advisors of New York Women in Communications. She has been honored by the New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs; Douglass College of Rutgers University; the East Bergen Business and Professional Women's Club; Columbia University School of Nursing, which awarded Ms. Levine a Second Century Award for Excellence in Health Care in 1997; and Birmingham (AL) Southern College. She served two terms as President of the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) and is in the Editors Hall of Fame. She has received many awards and citations of merit throughout her career including the Matrix award for exceptional achievement in 1989, one of the communication industry's most prestigious honors. As the result of her work as a member of the U.S. Attorney General's Commission on Pornography, the American Society of Journalists and Authors presented her with an award in 1986 for courage in the pursuit of truth. In 1987, Ms. Levine was similarly honored by the Atlantic Coast Independent Distributors, Inc. for distinguished service in defending the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. She was awarded the first annual Media Award by the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP) for the numerous articles on mental illness she has published in Good Housekeeping. Throughout her career, Ms. Levine has been cited by many organizations. In January 2004, she was inducted into the Magazine Editors' Hall of Fame by ASME and the Magazine Publishers of America. In November 2003, Ms. Levine received a Leadership in Media Award from the American Legacy Foundation for her anti-smoking accomplishments and a WISER Award from the Heinz Family Philanthropies.In October 2003, she is co-recipient of the Wind Beneath My Wings Leadership Award from the New York Restoration Project. She has also been recognized by the American Health Foundation (1996); received the Writer's Hall of Fame Award for her lifestyle coverage in 1981; served as a Delegate at the International Women's Media Foundation meeting in Prague, Czech Republic; and was elected to the YMCA's Academy of Women Achievers in 1982. Ms. Levine graduated from Wellesley College.
