He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Southwestern University, and served as Chairman of the Board of Visitors of University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. In the past, he has owned the San Antonio Spurs, which he secured for San Antonio in 1972. Mr. McCombs also owned the NBA Denver Nuggets which he sold in 1985. Mr. McCombs' most recent sports endeavor included the ownership of the Minnesota Vikings NFL Football team from 1998 to 2005. He has received honorary PhD’s from The University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas Lutheran University, and Southwestern University. Mr. McCombs attended Southwestern University and the University of Texas at Austin School of Business and School of Law.
