Background
Mr. Robert E. Rubin is a Special Limited Partner and Member of the Executive Advisory Board of Insight Venture Partners. He became a Member of the Advisory Board at the firm in March 2000. Mr. Rubin has been active in national and New York City’s public affairs. He was President Clinton’s choice to serve as U.S.A.’s 70th Secretary of the Treasury. Mr. Rubin was confirmed by the U.S. Senate and sworn into office on January 10, 1995 to 1999. As a Secretary of the Treasury,
... he played a leading role in many of the nation’s most important policy debates. Mr. Rubin was involved in balancing the federal budget, opening trade policy to further globalization, acting to stem financial crises in Mexico, Asia, and Russia, helping to resolve the impasse between the Congress and the Executive Branch over the public debt limit, safeguarding the nation’s currency against counterfeiting, introducing inflation-indexed securities, strongly responding to issues at treasury’s law enforcement agencies, and guiding sensible reforms at the Internal Revenue Service. He left U.S. Treasury on July 2, 1999. Mr. Rubin first joined the Clinton Administration in 1993 and served from 1993 to 1995 in the White House as an Assistant to the President for Economic Policy and Director of National Economic Council (NEC). Under his guidance, NEC oversaw the Administration’s domestic and international economic policymaking process, coordinated economic policy recommendations to the President, and monitored the implementation of the President’s economic policy goals. At the White House and Treasury, Mr. Rubin was a leading advocate for policy actions that met the need for economic development in the Nation’s distressed urban and rural areas. He began his career in finance at Goldman, Sachs and Company in New York City. Mr. Rubin was a Co-Senior Partner and Co-Chairman at the firm, from 1990 to 1992. He was a Co-Chief Operating Officer and Vice-Chairman of Goldman, Sachs and Company, from 1987 to 1990. Mr. Rubin was a General Partner in 1971 and a Member of the Management Committee in 1980. He had joined Goldman as an Associate in 1966. Mr. Rubin was an Attorney at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton in New York City. He has been a Director of Ford Motor Co. since 2000. Mr. Rubin had been a Director, Chairman of the Executive Committee, Senior Advisor, and Member of the Office of the Chairman of Citigroup Inc., where he worked extensively with the firm’s clients around the world. He joined Citigroup on October 26, 1999 and participated in the strategic, managerial, and operational matters of the company. From 1999 to 2009, Mr. Rubin served as a Member of the Board of Directors of Citigroup and as a Senior Advisor to the company. He served on the Board of Citigroup Finance Canada Inc. In 2003, Mr. Rubin was named Vice Chairman of Council on Foreign Relations Inc. and 2007, he was named Co-Chairman. He now serves as the Chairman of the Board of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation. Mr. Rubin serves on the Board of Trustees of Mount Sinai-NYU Health and The Mount Sinai Hospital. He is also a Member of the Harvard Corporation. Mr. Rubin previously served as a Member of the Board of Directors of the New York Stock Exchange, Harvard Management Company, New York Futures Exchange, New York City Partnership, and the Center for National Policy. He has also served on the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the President’s Advisory Committee for Trade Negotiations, the Securitie, and Exchange Commission Market Oversight. Mr. Rubin served on the Financial Services Advisory Committee, the Mayor of New York’s Council of Economic Advisors, and the Governor’s Council on Fiscal and Economic Priorities for the State of New York. In 2003, he was named the Vice Chairman of the Council on Foreign Relations and in 2007, he was named the Co-Chairman. In 2006, Mr. Rubin was one of the founders of The Hamilton Project. He is the author of In An Uncertain World: Tough Choices from Wall Street to Washington. Mr. Rubin holds an A.B. degree in Economics, summa cum laude, from Harvard College in 1960 and a L.L.B. degree from Yale Law School in 1964 and attended the London School of Economics.
