Prof. K. Barry Sharpless, Ph.D., serves as Advisor of Integrated Diagnostics Inc. Prof. Sharpless serves as W.M. Keck Professor of Chemistry of The Scripps Research Institute. He began his academic career as an Assistant Professor of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he worked from 1970 to 1990. In 2000, Chemical and Engineering News selected him as one of the top 75 most influential chemists of the 20th century. He has 40 years of experience in organic and bio-organic chemistry research and has published more than 350 peer-reviewed papers, patents, and publications. He pioneered the use of “click chemistry” a process that allows scientists to permanently join (“click”) together molecular components with unusual precision and stability. He is an elected fellow and member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the National Academy of Sciences. In 2001, he received not only the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, but also Israels Wolf Prize, the Benjamin Franklin Medal and the John Scott Medal Award. After receiving his Stanford Ph.D. from Professor E. E. VanTamelen in 1968, he did postdoctoral work with Professor James Collman of Stanford University in 1968 and Nobel Laureate Konrad Bloch at Harvard University in 1969. He completed a B.A. at Dartmouth College (T. A. Spencer) from 1963.
