From 1991 to his retirement in December, 2002, Dr. Lawrence was the Chief Executive Officer of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. and Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, and Chairman of the Board from 1992 to his retirement. He was the Vice Chairman of the Board and Chief Operating Officer at KFHP/KFH from 1990 to 1991. Dr. Lawrence was also the Senior Vice President and Regional Manager for Northern California from 1988 to 1989, and Vice President and Regional Manager in Colorado from 1985 to 1988. He was the Vice President and Area Medical Director for Northwest Permanente in Portland, Oregon from 1981 to 1985. Prior to joining Kaiser Permanente, Dr. Lawrence served as the Health Officer and Director of Human Services in Multnomah County, Oregon; on the faculty of Department of Health Services, and Director of MEDEX in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, University of Washington; as Advisor to the Ministry of Health of Chile; and as Peace Corps Physician in the Dominican Republic and Washington, District of Columbia; and Director of the Office of Medical Programs for the Peace Corps. As the former head of the largest integrated medical care system in United States, Dr. Lawrence has a uniquely broad perspective on the healthcare industry. He serves on the Boards of Agilent Technologies since July 1999, McKesson Corporation since January 2004, Dynavax Technologies, Wellpartner, Proteus Biomed, and Proventys, Inc. He is an Executive Advisor at Gryphon Investors. Dr. Lawrence is a Director of the RAND Health Advisory Board since January 2004 and a member of the Advisory Board for the RAND COMPARE study on national health reform. He is a Special Advisor to Proteus Biomedical. Dr. Lawrence has been the Chairman Emeritus at Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. and Kaiser Foundation Hospitals since May 2002. Dr. Lawrence is a Member of Advisory Board of Burrill Life Sciences Capital Fund III, L.P. and Burrill Life Sciences Capital Fund II, L.P., also serves as an advisor to the CEO’s of SomaLogic, Inc., and MedExpert, Inc., and teaches with the Estes Park Institute. He had been a Director of Pacific Gas & Electric Company and its Lead Independent Director since March 2003. Dr. Lawrence had been a Director of PG&E Corporation since 1996, and was a Member of its Nominating, Compensation, and Corporate Governance Committees. He was a Director of Raffles Medical Group (Singapore) since January 2004. He is a founding member of the Lucien Leape Institute of the National Patient Safety Foundation, and on the Advisory Board to the California Prison Health System. Dr. Lawrence conducts an independent consulting and teaching practice focused on health care integration and leadership. He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha (Medical Honorary Society) and the Institute of Medicine (National Academy of Sciences). Dr. Lawrence is the author of From Chaos to Care: The Promise of Team-Based Medicine (Perseus Press, 2002). He has been recognized as the Outstanding Alumnus of the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, University of Washington (1980); and The Outstanding Alumnus, College of Medicine, University of Kentucky (1995). Dr. Lawrence was inducted into the Hall of Distinguished Alumni, University of Kentucky (1995). He was named Distinguished Advisor to the National Patient Safety Foundation in 2005. He holds Honorary degrees including Doctor of Science in 1994 from Amherst College; Doctor of Letters, in 1995, from Colgate University; and a Doctor of Science in 1997 from the University of Kentucky. Dr. Lawrence is Board Certified in General Preventive Medicine from Johns Hopkins and University of Washington. Dr. Lawrence holds an M.P.H. from the University of Washington, an M.D. from the University of Kentucky, and a B.A. from the Amherst College.
