Background

Dr. Mae C. Jemison, M.D. founded The Jemison Group, Inc., and has been its President since 1993. Dr. Jemison founded BioSentient Corp. in December 2000 and serves as its President and Chief Executive Officer. She serves as Bayer Corporation's national advocate for the Making Science Make Sense initiative. She is a Founder of The Earth We Share (TEWS). She is guiding BioSentient Corp. in the design, development and marketing of leading-edge, NASA-patented ambulatory equipment ... that provides real-time, real-life physiologic monitoring and the means to control one's responses to their environment and stimuli. She is the A.D. White Professor-at-Large at Cornell University. From 1987 to 1993, she served as a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) astronaut and was a Member of the Space Shuttle Endeavor Flight since September 1992. She served for six years as a NASA astronaut. Before joining NASA, Dr. Jemison served as the Area Peace Corps Medical Officer for Sierra Leone and Liberia in West Africa, and practiced medicine in Los Angeles. She was an environmental studies Professor of Dartmouth College from 1995 to 2002, where she ran The Jemison Institute for Advancing Technologies in Developing Countries. Dr. Jemison serves as the Chairman of The Earth We Share (TEWS). She serves as Chair of the State of Texas Biotechnology and Life Science Cluster Report. She has been a Director of Scholastic Corp. since 1993; Valspar Corp. since January 2002 and an Independent Director at Kimberly-Clark Corporation since September 1, 2002. She serves as a Director of The Dorothy Jemison Foundation for Excellence and the Texas Governor's Council for Science and BioTechnology Development. She served as Director of Gen-Probe Inc. from March 16, 2004 to July 20, 2007. She is also the Chairman of the State of Texas Product Development and Small Business Incubator Board, and she is a member of the National Advisory Council for Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering and the Greater Houston Partnership Executive Committee. Dr. Jemison is a Member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, an inductee of the National Women's Hall of Fame and the National Medical Association Hall of Fame, and a winner of the Kilby Science Award. Dr. Jemison is the first woman of color to go into space. She received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and an A.B. in African and Afro-American Studies as an Undergraduate at Stanford in 1977, and received her Medical Degree from the Cornell University in 1981.
