Berl Bernhard is a Partner of Piper Rudnick, L.L.P. Mr. Bernhard served as Senior Advisor to Secretary of State Edmund S. Muskie (1980-81), having served previously as special advisor to Secretary of State Dean Rusk and Under Secretary of State W. Averell Harriman (1963-65). During the administration of President John F. Kennedy, Mr. Bernhard served as Staff Director of the United States Commission on Civil Rights, having been nominated by President Kennedy and confirmed
... by the Senate. In 1966, he was Special Counsel and Director of the White House Conference “To Fulfill These Rights“ under President Johnson. In 1971 and 1972, he was national presidential campaign manager for Senator Edmund S. Muskie. In the successful campaigns for reelection to the United States Senate in 1986 and 1992, he served as national finance chairman for Ernest F. “Fritz“ Hollings. Mr. Bernhard negotiated the acquisition of the Washington Star Newspaper on behalf of Allbritton Communications and became its General Counsel and a Director prior to the ultimate sale of the Washington Star to Time, Inc. in 1978. He was the lawyer in charge of the Pan American World Airways' acquisition of National Airlines and coordinated both the legal and political efforts to attain that successful merger. He represented Pan Am and Intercontinental Hotels Corporation at the Hague for the recovery of Iranian assets. He directed the regulatory and legislative efforts necessary for the acquisition of Northwest Airlines by the Checchi Group and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. He has had responsibility for negotiating acquisitions, other financial transactions and trade controversies for companies in Europe, the Caribbean and Canada. Mr. Bernhard spearheaded the internal investigation of the United Way of America. He served as Chairman of the board of DLA Piper US LLP. In addition to being the Co-Founder and former Chairman of Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson & Hand, (which merged into Piper-Rudnick), he served as Chairman of The Aspen Institute (1991-1996) and chairman of its Executive Committee, upon which committee he continues to sit as trustee. He serves as a Director of DLA Piper US LLP. He has been a Director of Uniroyal Chemical Company, Inc., a manufacturer of speciality chemicals. He is currently a Director of The Edmund S. Muskie Foundation and Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, Inc., and is a Trustee at the Aspen Institute. He was a Trustee of the first Board of Higher Education of the District of Columbia (1966-1968) which created the Federal City College (now the University of the District of Columbia). He served as Director of UNC Inc., since 1992. Since 1982. Mr. Bernhard served for 10 years as a trustee of Dartmouth College, as a member of the Board of Overseers of the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration, as well as a member of the Board of Visitors of the Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for the Social Sciences. He was Special Counsel to the Trustee of Eastern Airlines and Special Counsel to the Chairman of Northwest Airlines. He served as Trustee and a member of the Executive Committee of the Federal City Council from 1988-1992. He serves as a Honorary Trustee at Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. He done his J.D. from Yale University in 1954 and B.A. form Dartmouth College in 1951.
