Background

Dr. Richard N. Haass has been President of Council on Foreign Relations Inc. since July 2003. Dr. Haass served as a Director of Policy Planning for the Department of State Until June 2003. Dr. Haass served as a Principal Advisor to Secretary of State Colin Powell on a broad range of foreign policy concerns at the Department of State. Dr. Haass has an extensive additional government experience. He served in various posts in the Departments of State from 1981 to 1985 & ... Defense from 1979 to 1980 and was a legislative aide in the U.S. Senate. Dr. Haass has been a Director of Fortress Investment Group LLC since February 2007. He serves as a Director of Fortress Credit Corporation. Dr. Haass served as Vice President and Director of Foreign Policy Studies of The Brookings Institution, the Sol M. Linowitz Visiting Professor of International Studies of Hamilton College, a senior associate of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a Lecturer in Public Policy at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, and a research associate at the International Institute for Strategic Studies. Dr. Haass served as U.S. Coordinator for policy toward the future of Afghanistan and was the lead U.S. Government official in support of the Northern Ireland peace process. He is the author or editor of ten books on American foreign policy. From 1989 to 1993, he served as Special Assistant to President George Bush and Senior Director for Near East and South Asian Affairs on the staff of the National Security Council. He serves as Director of Council on Foreign Relations Inc. He received the State Department's Distinguished Honor Award. He authored the book, The Opportunity, which was published in Spring 2005 by Public Affairs. He is also the author of one book on management: The Bureaucratic Entrepreneur: How to Be Effective in Any Unruly Organization. In 1991, Dr. Haass was awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal for his contributions to the development and articulation of U.S. policy during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. A Rhodes Scholar, Dr. Haass holds a BA from Oberlin College and both the Master and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Oxford University.
