Earlier, he served at Intersouth Partners and Intersouth Partners VI, VII, L.P. as a General Partner, where Mr. Rainey joined in May 2000 and identified and evaluated information technology and life science investment opportunities, working in the entrepreneurial community from Baltimore to Richmond. Previously, he served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Total SumParts, which Mr. Rainey founded in 1998. He served at da Vinci Systems, LLC. and Theglobe.com Inc. He has more than 25 years of experience investing in and managing technology companies. Mr. Rainey served leadership positions with the Northern Virginia Technology Council. He served as the Chief Operating Officer of DaVinci Systems, where Mr. Rainey spearheaded its acquisition by ON Technology. Before becoming an entrepreneur, he served senior executive positions at Novel and IBM. At Novell, Mr. Rainey was responsible for all reseller programs and channel distribution. At IBM, he managed and served as a Director of channel distribution and brand marketing for the Network Hardware Division and established and managed product marketing and distribution in 50 countries. Mr. Rainey designed and launched Novell’s much-emulated global Authorized Dealer Program in the late 1980’s. He is among a select group of venture capitalists chosen to serves as a Consultant to the Chief Information Officer of the United States Department of Defense (DoD) through the DeVenCI program, advising the DoD on emerging technologies. In Fall 2008, Mr. Rainey served as an Emerging Technology Consultant to the Chief Information Officer of the US Department of Defense through the DeVenCi Program. He is a Member of Strategic Advisory Board of Amplifier Venture Partners LP. He serves as a Co-Chairman of Capital Connection 2007. He serves as an organizing Board Member of Mindshare where he helps Chief Executive Officers from the D.C. region's startups build long-term sustainable companies. Mr. Rainet is a Director of ARPU, Inc., HelloWallet, LLC, HelloWallet, Inc, Clarabridge, Inc., GramercyOne Technology Corporation, Hungry Machine, Inc (also known as LivingSocial), Personal, Inc., Northern VA Chapter of the March of Dimes, March Of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation, SnappCloud, Inc. and Zenoss, Inc. He serves as a Director of The Mid-Atlantic Venture Association, where Mr. Rainey served leadership positions. He served as a Director of Booker Software, Inc., Quantum Photonics, Bright Hub, Inc., MaxCyte, Inc. and Defywire, Inc. He served as a Member of Advisory Board of Amplifier Venture Partners LP. He also served as a Founding Board Member at Accipiter through its acquisition by CMGI. He served on the Investment Advisory Board of the State of Virginia’s Growth Acceleration Program as well as the Board of the Virginia Tech Intellectual Properties Foundation. Mr. Rainey serves as an Adjunct Professor of American University, where he teaches graduate courses entitled “New Venture Finance” and “Venture Capital and Private Equity”. In 2011, Mr. Rainey was appointed to the James Madison University (JMU) Board of Visitors by Virginia Governor Robert McDonnell and he also serves on the Board of Directors of James Madison Innovations, Inc. He is a frequent speaker at local and national technology events, and was included on Washingtonian's Tech Titans list in May 2011. The Northern Virginia Technology Council presented Mr. Rainey with prestigious “Lifetime Navigator” Award for his work with entrepreneurs in March 2011. He is an Adjunct Professor at George Mason University and teaches a course on venture capital in the School of Management and the University of Maryland, teaching graduate courses on Management new venture creation and finance. Mr. Rainey has M.S. in Bioscience Management from George Mason University and a B.B.A. from James Madison University.
