Highmark Inc. Sues UPMC for Cancer Treatment Billing Practices

Highmark Inc. has filed a lawsuit against UPMC alleging the health care provider used improper billing practices to "substantially" inflate rates Highmark and Keystone Health Plan West Inc. paid for UPMC's oncology services. The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas. As a result, Highmark said UPMC has "profited enormously" by unilaterally shifting the billing of claims of these services from established physician-based billing to billing the charges at higher hospital outpatient rates.
UPMC Names Leslie C. Davis as President of Hospital and Community Services Division

UPMC announced the appointment of Leslie C. Davis as President of its Hospital and Community Services Division. Ms. Davis succeeds Elizabeth B. Concordia, who recently was recruited to become the CEO of the University of Colorado Health System. In her new role, Ms. Davis will be responsible for leading UPMC's patient care enterprise, which includes 20 hospitals, 17 senior community facilities, and a comprehensive array of clinical specialty service lines, and pre- and post-acute services such as senior living, rehabilitation and home care. Ms. Davis has more than 30 years of experience in health care, with particular emphasis on operations and developing businesses and services. Most recently, she has served as president of Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC since 2004.
UPMC Reports Financial Results for the First Nine Months of Fiscal Year 2014

UPMC reported financial results for the first nine months of fiscal year 2014. For the period, the company's operating revenues increased by $957 million to $8.5 billion for the first nine months, due primarily to growth in insurance services, the affiliation with UPMC Altoona and increased patient volumes. Operating income, which is reinvested in programs that support UPMC's mission, was $176 million for the period ending March 31, 2014. The company's excess of revenues over expenses (net income), including $107 million related to the inherent contribution recorded due to the UPMC Altoona affiliation, was $553 million. Earnings before interest, depreciation and amortization (EBIDA) were $514 million. During the first nine months, the company spent $335 million in capital expenditures and business investments to advance clinical excellence, good science, smart technology and accountable care.
