UPMC Opens Centralized Clinical Lab to Speed Diagnoses for Patients
Oct 24 13
UPMC opened the new $39 million Clinical Labs Building (CLB) on its Oakland campus to provide faster and more cost-effective diagnostic testing for patients. Located at the site of the former Rangos Children's Research Building on Fifth Avenue, the CLB houses 13 labs, which moved from UPMC Presbyterian, UPMC Montefiore and Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC.
National Labor Relations Board Issues Complaint against UPMC
Oct 2 13
The National Labor Relations Board has issued a complaint against UPMC, finding that evidence exists of 44 new allegations of anti-union activities at UPMC Presbyterian, the system's hospital in Oakland. UPMC has until Oct. 15, 2013 to respond and an NLRB hearing to rule on the merits of the complaint has been scheduled for Dec. 16, 2013. The NLRB office is closed due to the federal budget crisis, so the hearing may be rescheduled. The Service Employees International Union alleged that UPMC illegally fired, threatened and retaliated against workers and the allegations follow a settlement that UPMC and the union reached in February on 80 other charges that were filed with the NLRB. The union is seeking the reinstatement with back pay of four fired workers, including one person who had been fired and reinstated as part of the February settlement, then fired again.
U.S. District Court Dismiss Antitrust Case Against UPMC and Highmark Inc
Sep 27 13
An antitrust lawsuit against UPMC and Highmark Inc. alleging collusion in propping up health insurance rates and preventing other carriers from entering the market was dismissed, but the judge left open the door to refilling the complaint within 30 days. Chief U.S. District Court Judge Joy Flowers Conti dismissed "claims for tortious interference with existing and prospect contractual relations against UPMC" because the two-year statute of limitations expired. She also cited health insurance rate-setting issues in issuing her decision. Royal Mile Co. Inc., Pamela Lang and Cole's Wexford Hotel Inc. in 2010 filed a seven-count lawsuit against UPMC and Highmark in U.S. District Court, claiming restraint of trade, conspiracy to monopolize and other violations of federal law. The lawsuit claimed UPMC agreed to not let other carriers into its hospital network if Highmark delayed introduction of Community Blue, a low-cost plan with a limited network of medical providers.
