Open Invention Network (OIN) announced that Wolfson Microelectronics plc has joined OIN as a licensee. In doing so, Wolfson, is demonstrating its commitment to intellectual property (IP) non-aggression in Linux. Linux is a core technology within a number of Wolfson parts including ALSA system-on-a-chip (ASoC), a subsystem that provides a framework for audio in embedded systems running Linux and TinyHAL, which supports Android's audio Hardware Abstract Layer. Additionally, Wolfson has created a number of key audio, touchscreen and power management drivers that are part of the Linux Kernel.

Open Invention Network, LLC (OIN) reported that it has furthered its mission to enable and protect Linux by expanding the Linux System technologies covered by its protective network of royalty-free cross-licenses and by its defensive patent portfolio to include nearly three hundred new Linux software packages. According to the Company, these additions contain a number of packages from notable technologies and projects such as Python (e.g., Django, PyPy, and Twisted), MongoDB, OpenStack, Ruby, and webOS. This new coverage builds upon the two updates to OIN's Linux System definition in 2012, during which OIN added more than 700 new software packages to its Linux System.
