Virginia's Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) awarded five contracts worth $72.7 million for new construction and paving projects. The projects will improve traffic flow, benefit safety and extend the life of the state's transportation infrastructure. City of Fredericksburg road/bridge improvements: The nearly $30.8 million design-build contract, awarded to Corman Construction Company Inc. of Annapolis, Md., will construct a new four-lane bridge on Fall Hill Avenue over Interstate 95; Widen Fall Hill Avenue to a four-lane divided highway from Carl D. Silver Parkway to a roundabout adjacent to the Fall Hill Avenue bridge over the Rappahannock Canal at the proposed intersection of Fall Hill Avenue and the extension of Mary Washington Boulevard; and Extend Mary Washington Boulevard from its terminus north of U.S. 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway) to the roundabout intersection with Fall Hill Avenue new the Rappahannock Canal bridge. These improvements will result in a continuous four-lane corridor from the intersection of U.S. 1 and Mary Washington Boulevard to the Carl D. Silver Parkway in the Central Park commercial district. The entire project is scheduled for completion in early 2017. Virginia Capital Trail Park Phase Bicycle Trail: The $6.3 million design-build contract, awarded to George Nice and Sons Inc. of Toano, Va., will build a 3.5-mile, 10-foot-wide bike trail and related structures between Route 5 through Dorey and Four Mile Park and tie into the Varina phase of the Virginia Capital Trail. Interstate 295 pavement rehabilitation: The $21 million contract awarded to Branscome Inc. of Williamsburg, Va., will go toward restoring the existing pavements on Interstate 295 in both directions in Chesterfield, Henrico and Prince George counties and the city of Hopewell. Hanover County: The $8.4 million contract, awarded to G.A. and F.C. Wagman Inc. of York, Pa., will replace the superstructure and approaches on Route 54 over Interstate 95. Spotsylvania, Stafford counties: A $6.2 million contract, awarded to American Infrastructure-VA Inc. of Glen Allen, Va., will go toward repaving projects in the region.

The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a $6.3 million contract to G.A. & F.C. Wagman Inc. of York, Pa. for a preservation project on the westbound Wright Memorial Bridge over the Currituck Sound on U.S. 158 at the Currituck and Dare County line. The project will begin this fall to avoid impacts to summer traffic.
