Maryland Department of Transportation Names Appoints James T. Jim Smith, Jr. as Secretary

Governor Martin O'Malley announced the appointment of James T. Jim Smith, Jr. as Secretary of the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT). Mr. Smith will oversee the Transportation Infrastructure Investment Act of 2013's $4.4 billion in new investments over the next six years and manage a 10,000-employee department. Mr. Smith currently is an attorney with the Towson law firm of Smith, Gildea & Schmidt focused on business matters, administrative law and governmental affairs. Mr. Smith also has served with important State and regional organizations and committees that work closely with MDOT and the State of Maryland, including: the Baltimore Metropolitan Council. The Governor also named Robert L. Smith as the new Administrator for the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) as Maryland Transportation Secretary.

Governor Martin O'Malley has appointed William K. "Bill" Hellmann of Severna Park to serve as the newest Board Member of the Maryland Department Of Transportation. Mr. Hellmann is a former Secretary of the Maryland Department of Transportation (April 1984 - April 1987) and Partner Emeritus of RKandK, LLP. Previously, Mr. Hellmann also served as Chief of the Interstate Division for Baltimore City.
