Natural Systems Utilities Receives Contract to Operate and Manage FCPC's Waste-To-Energy Facility
Sep 30 13
Natural Systems Utilities has received a contract to operate and manage the Forest County Potawatomi Community's, or FCPC, waste-to-energy facility in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The $18.5 million FCPC project will create two megawatts of renewable electricity daily, enough to power approximately 1,500 homes, by converting food waste from local food and beverage companies to electricity. The FCPC Biothane anaerobic membrane bioreactor engineered by Symbiont of Milwaukee and constructed by Miron Construction of Neenah, Wisconsin, processes food waste in tanks devoid of oxygen. Bacteria consume the waste and produce methane as a byproduct, which is extracted and burned in engine generators to create electricity. The electricity is sent to the grid and will be purchased by We Energies. By diverting waste from landfills and wastewater treatment plants, the biogas facility could mitigate up to 87,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually (data source from US Department of Energy).
