Bupa Announces Strategic Partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield system to Create a Global Healthcare Provider Network

Bupa has announced a strategic global partnership with the Blue Cross Blue Shield system (BCBS) to create a global healthcare provider network, including 11,500 hospitals and 750,000 medical professionals in 190 countries. The partnership will combine BCBS's US network, their existing international network (accessed through their IPMI product, GeoBlue), and Bupa's non-US international hospital network. Bupa and BCBS will also develop new international health insurance products, which will be available to customers and employers worldwide for coverage in 2015.

Marathon Patent Group, Inc. announced that its subsidiary Sampo IP, LLC has filed a patent infringement lawsuit in the United States District Court for the eastern district of Texas against Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC, Siemens Energy, Inc., CB Apex Realtors, Coldwell Banker Apex Realtors, Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, Juniper Networks, Inc., Winn-Dixie Stores Inc., and Dell, Inc. (the "Defendants"). Sampo is asserting three causes of action involving patent infringement related to U.S. Patent numbers 6,161,149, 6,772,229, and 8,015,495, all entitled Centrifugal Communication and Collaboration Method. The lawsuit alleges that the defendants have infringed, and continue to infringe, the claims of the patents in suit by using the accused communications systems and methods covered by the claims of the Sampo patents.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association Names Trent Haywood as Chief Medical Officer

Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association announced that Dr. Trent Haywood will be the new Chief Medical Officer when Allan Korn, MD, retires at year end. Dr. Haywood has medical executive experience in both the public and private sectors. He has led initiatives to align physician payment systems with improved clinical quality and disease management, and has been instrumental in driving clinical innovation. Dr. Haywood previously worked at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), where he led agency priorities including quality public reporting and value-based payments. Following his tenure at CMS, Dr. Haywood served as the senior vice president and chief medical officer for VHA Inc. in Texas.
