Cleary Gottlieb Partner David Gelfand Joins U.S. Department of Justice as A Deputy Assistant Attorney General

Cleary Gottlieb partner David Gelfand will join the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice as a Deputy Assistant Attorney General under Assistant Attorney General Bill Baer. David joined the Washington office as an associate in 1991 and became a partner in 1997. From 2001 to 2004, he was resident in the firm’s Brussels office where he handled matters before the European Commission and national competition authorities throughout Europe. David will begin his new role at the U.S. Department of Justice on August 26, 2013.

Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP announced that Robert W. Cook, former director of the division of trading and markets at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, will return to the firm as a partner. Based in the firm's Washington office, he will focus on securities, derivatives and market regulation. He held the SEC role from January 2010 to January 2013, during which time he directed the staff's review of equity market structure and its analysis of the ‘Flash Crash’ of May 6, 2010, as well as its work on regulatory responses such as single-stock circuit breakers, updated market wide circuit breakers, and more transparent trade cancellation rules.
