Meijer Seeks Greenfield Approval to Build Store at Former Mount Carmel Site
Aug 7 14
Meijer Inc. is seeking Greenfield's approval to build a new store and gas station at South 60th Street and West Layton Avenue to replace the vacant Mount Carmel nursing home. Meijer's plan recently submitted to the city confirms reports in March that the company was eyeing the Ventas site, which was formerly the Mount Carmel nursing home. The company would redevelop the 22.5-acre property with an almost 193,000-square-foot store with groceries, home goods, a drive-up pharmacy and garden center. The project will go to the Greenfield Plan Commission on Aug. 12. The next day, Meijer's proposed store in Waukesha at 831 E. Sunset Drive will undergo a review at that city's Plan Commission. Those stores are the latest in Meijer's push to enter the Milwaukee area, where it has stores under construction in several communities, including Wauwatosa.
Meijer Continues to Invest in Detroit's Revitalization with A Second Detroit Store
Jun 30 14
Less than a year after Meijer opened a supercenter at the historical Michigan State Fairgrounds on 8 Mile Road and Woodward Avenue, the retailer continued its investment in the city of Detroit with a formal groundbreaking ceremony for a second supercenter to be located at the site of the former Redford High School on the city's west side. The planned supercenter represents the retailer's commitment to the city and its residents, as well as its philosophy of serving the needs of families by providing quality merchandise, fresh produce and a full-service, drive-thru pharmacy that puts family health care first. Located at Grand River Ave. and McNichols Road, the planned northeast Detroit store is expected to create up to 500 jobs and will embody the commitment to community that has guided the family-owned retailer over the years. Meijer donates more than 6% of its net profit each year to charitable organizations, including food banks and pantries. The company also partners with local farmers and businesses, when available, to provide locally-grown produce and other local products.
