Amir Ghaffari joined Vinson & Elkins as a partner in London. He represents energy, financial services, private equity, construction and engineering clients, among others, and has handled arbitrations administered under the rules of all the major arbitral institutions, as well as in ad hoc proceedings. Ghaffari joins from Berwin Leighton Paisner LLP. He recently served as a co-chair of the London Court of International Arbitration's Young International Arbitration Group. Ghaffari's recent work includes an ICC arbitration for an Austrian construction company in a dispute with its Saudi project owner, three consolidated ICC arbitrations representing a global private equity fund in major real estate projects and an LCIA arbitration involving various distributorship agreements. Ghaffari also handles investor state and state-to-state arbitrations, including boundary disputes.

Vinson & Elkins partner Karl S. Stern is taking over as the Managing Partner of the firm's Houston office, succeeding Marie Yeates who has served in the role for nearly seven years. Karl, who has led the firm's Global Litigation & Regulatory Department since 2010, will focus his efforts as the Houston office's Managing Partner on strengthening V&E's deep ties within the vibrant business community of the nation's fourth larger city. V&E partner Jim Thompson will succeed Karl in leading the firm's Global Litigation & Regulatory Department. Karl joined V&E in 1982. For more than 30 years, Karl has tried cases to juries, courts and arbitrators in state and federal courts throughout the U.S. and before domestic and international arbitral tribunals. Karl handles complex business cases, including cases involving antitrust claims, and disputes relating to complex transactions, entity governance, mergers and acquisitions, energy trading, and shareholder rights. As the new Global Litigation & Regulatory leader, Jim takes over a growing group of 275 lawyers that contributed 43% of the firm's revenue last year. V&E is known for its energy litigation and environmental practice, as well as its nationally-recognized appellate practice, experience in securities, M&A, white collar and antitrust litigation and international arbitration.
