Dr. Foege, an epidemiologist and former director of the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, has left an indelible mark on the field of global health. Recognized as the health innovator behind the successful campaign to eradicate smallpox in the 1970s, Dr. Foege received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012, the nation's high civilian honor. He was a senior medical advisor for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation from 1999 until his retirement in 2011.

Prior to the Senate, Dr. first spent 20 years in clinical medicine, completing surgical training at Massachusetts General Hospital and Stanford. Currently a professor of surgery at both Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Meharry Medical School, he serves on the board of directors for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Kaiser Family Foundation, and Harvard Medical School Board of Fellows, on the Advisory Committees for Global Health at both Duke and Harvard, and as co-chair of the Health Project for the Bipartisan Policy Center.
