Canadian Institutes of Health Research Appoints Michel Perron as Vice-President, External Affairs and Business Development

Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) announced the appointment of Mr. Michel Perron to the position of Vice-President, External Affairs and Business Development effective September 2, 2014. Since 1999, Mr. Perron has served as Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse where he championed a national, collaborative approach to preventing and addressing the impacts of substance abuse. In the position of Vice-President, External Affairs and Business Development, Mr. Perron will provide CIHR with leadership on all matters related to political and strategic relations, partnerships, communications and public mobilization. In this role, he will also ensure that CIHR's strategic partnerships and relations with various stakeholders promote the advancement of health research in Canada and maximize its impact. Finally, as a member of Science Council, he will participate in defining and managing the organization's strategic directions.

Canadian Institutes of Health Research Announces Appointment of El-Gabalawy as Scientific Director of CIHR's Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis

Canadian Institutes of Health Research announced the appointment of Dr. Hani El-Gabalawy as incoming Scientific Director of CIHR's Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (CIHR-IMHA). This appointment will be effective April 15, 2013. Dr. El-Gabalawy, an internationally recognized rheumatologist, is Professor of Medicine and Immunology, and senior clinician scientist at the University of Manitoba. Dr. El-Gabalawy has held a number of administrative positions at the University of Manitoba, including serving as an academic Division Head of Rheumatology and Arthritis Centre Director for 3 terms, Clinical Director of the Rheumatology Research Laboratory, Residency Program Director, and Chair of the Grants and Allocations Committee for the Health Sciences Centre Foundation in Winnipeg. He has served as a member and Chair of CIHR peer review committees, and has held key leadership positions in The Arthritis Society, the Canadian Arthritis Network Centres of Excellence, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He is also a former member of the CIHR-IMHA Institute Advisory Board.
