Canadian Institutes of Health Research announced the appointment of Dr. Hani El-Gabalawy as incoming Scientific Director of CIHR's Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (CIHR-IMHA). This appointment will be effective April 15, 2013. Dr. El-Gabalawy, an internationally recognized rheumatologist, is Professor of Medicine and Immunology, and senior clinician scientist at the University of Manitoba. Dr. El-Gabalawy has held a number of administrative positions at the University of Manitoba, including serving as an academic Division Head of Rheumatology and Arthritis Centre Director for 3 terms, Clinical Director of the Rheumatology Research Laboratory, Residency Program Director, and Chair of the Grants and Allocations Committee for the Health Sciences Centre Foundation in Winnipeg. He has served as a member and Chair of CIHR peer review committees, and has held key leadership positions in The Arthritis Society, the Canadian Arthritis Network Centres of Excellence, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He is also a former member of the CIHR-IMHA Institute Advisory Board.

Canadian Institutes of Health Research announced the appointment of Dr. Robert Thirsk to the position of vice-president, public, Government and Institute Affairs effective August 13, 2012. In the newly created position of Vice-President, Public, Government and Institute Affairs, Dr. Thirsk will provide CIHR with expert advice on all matters related to strategic relations, public and private sector partnerships, communication and public outreach. In this role, he will also be a key player in supporting the Institutes to fulfill their respective mandates.

Canadian Institutes of Health Research announced the appointments of the Michael H. Wilson, PC, CC and Ms. Lori Turik to the Governing Council of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research for three-year terms. The Michael H. Wilson, PC, CC is the Chairman of Barclays Capital Canada Inc. He was Ambassador of Canada to the United States of America from 2006 to 2009. Elected to the House of Commons in 1979, Mr. Wilson was Canada's Minister of Finance from 1984 to 1991. Mr. Wilson also served as Minister of Industry, Science and Technology and Minister for International Trade. Ms. Lori Turik is the Executive Director of the Ivey International Centre for Health Innovation at the University of Western Ontario (Richard Ivey School of Business). Ms. Turik has extensive background providing strategic, government relations, policy, stakeholder relations and communications advice to public and private sector clients in her capacity as Consultant Associate with Link Strategies. She served as Vice President of Public Policy for the Canadian Association of Chain Drug Stores. A Registered Nurse, Ms. Turik was Director of Nursing with the public health nursing division in Ontario and has over 12 years of experience in senior nursing positions and health care research.
