The South African Breweries Limited Reaches Wage Deal with Strikers
Nov 5 13
Striking workers at SABMiller's South African affiliate The South African Breweries Limited have accepted a 7% wage rise, the firm and a union said on November 5, 2013 announcing the end of five weeks of industrial action. More than 2,000 workers downed tools on September 30 demanding a 9.5% wage increase, but the numbers fell to 1,400 people by the end of the strike. The company claimed only 750 workers had been on strike at the end. The new wage agreement raises average salaries to $1,800 a month. A total of 5,600 workers are employed in the company's beer division.
FAWU Members Starts with Strike Action in Support of Their Demands
Oct 2 13
About 2,200 members of the Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU), employed by the beer division of the South African Breweries (SAB) Ltd, have started an indefinite strike action as from the September 30, 2013. This follows failure to reach an agreement on wages, working conditions and benefits between FAWU and SAB management. Chief among the dispute issues are: wage increment and its structure: FAWU members want a 9% increment across the board (ATB) yet the employer offer 7%, with a split of 60% of this going to ATB and non-guaranteed 40% payable as performance pay; Members want equal participation in the Board of Trustees of Provident Fund and Medical Scheme through people they deploy.
