EnterpriseDB Expands Cloud Access to Postgres with New Amazon Products
Sep 10 14
EnterpriseDB announced two new Postgres cloud database options on Amazon's AWS Marketplace. The Postgres deployments create new options for end users and include point-in-time recovery, support for Amazon's provisioned IOPS and advanced load balancing for greater scalability and performance. The new products on AWS Marketplace are Postgres Plus Cloud Database Basic, which features community open source PostgreSQL, and Postgres Plus Cloud Database Advanced, which features EDB's database Postgres Plus Advanced Server with database compatibility for Oracle and enhanced performance features. Both are available globally through Amazon Web Services. By deploying on Amazon Marketplace, EDB can now offer separate cloud database products for PostgreSQL and Postgres Plus Advanced Server and make it easier for end users to choose the database that suits their needs. Both versions of the database provide end users with the portability of accessing the same database in the cloud as in the datacenter, enabling faster application development/deployment cycles. Postgres Plus Advanced Server includes performance, security and manageability enhancements for enterprise-class workloads and it supports applications written for Oracle. What's more, each of the new Postgres database deployments still feature the characteristics unique to EDB's cloud framework, such as the ability to automatically scale and add additional compute resources as needed in response to fluctuations in demand. A sophisticated management console controls the database according to user-defined thresholds and guides the auto scaling and load balancing. New Enterprise-class Features: With the new products, EDB added to its cloud deployments a series of new features, including: Point-in-time recovery -- enhances disaster recovery by enabling end users to restore a database after application or other failure as it was at a specific point in time they can define. Support for Amazon's Provisioned IOPS -- ensures consistent database performance and increases overall performance for I/O intensive workloads. Enhanced automated load balancing -- ensures consistent operations during spikes in demand for processing power. Support for 11 new Amazon machine types -- gives end users more choices in their deployment configurations.
EnterpriseDB Extends Postgres' Big Data Capacity With New MongoDB, Hadoop Extensions
Jul 24 14
EnterpriseDB announced the first release of two new extensions that expand PostgreSQL's ability to seamlessly integrate information from big data and NoSQL-only solutions. Providing a single view of data across multiple sources breaks down barriers between the siloes created by big data and NoSQL-only solutions and deepens end user insight into their data. EDB has released an updated Foreign Data Wrapper (FDW) for MongoDB to the open source PostgreSQL community and is planning to release one for Hadoop in fall. The Foreign Data Wrappers take advantage of expanded capabilities that were introduced in PostgreSQL v9.3. EDB further optimized the MongoDB FDW for performance and long-term code stability through the use of the new MongoDB Meta Driver. As new data technologies and solution sources emerged, developers in the open source community built capabilities for using Postgres to work with data from outside sources. Foreign Data Wrappers were made possible in 2011 with the release of PostgreSQL 9.1, which featured support for the ANSI SQL Standard implementation of SQL/MED (SQL Management of External Data). FDWs enable users to integrate structured and unstructured data within their Postgres databases, where they can read and write SQL queries to foreign data sources.
Infor, Red Hat and EnterpriseDB Partner to Offer Infor LN on Open Source Stack
Apr 25 14
Infor has announced a joint collaboration with Red Hat, Inc. to make Infor LN ERP available on an open technology stack. By leveraging Red Hat Enterprise Linux, JBoss Enterprise Middleware solutions and EnterpriseDB's Postgres Plus, Infor LN provides customers with a flexible solution based on industry standards that is high performing and reliable with the flexibility to be moved between on-premise and cloud deployments. The deployment flexibility enables Infor LN to quickly adapt to changing business requirements while lowering the total cost of ownership. Infor applications on an open technology stack allows to configure a delivery model with fewer licensing and distribution restrictions, and more easily move images between on premise and the cloud as customer needs dictate. The addition of EnterpriseDB's high performance Postgres database to this open source platform enables Infor customers to lower the cost of deployment while maintaining scalability, performance and reliability and gain new levels of deployment flexibility.
