Northern Gas Networks Limited Invests GBP 400,000 to Upgrade Gas Distribution Network in Leeds
Sep 10 13
Northern Gas Networks Limited, a gas distribution company, has announced that it is investing GBP 400,000 to upgrade the gas distribution network in Leeds city center. The major project is part of Northern Gas Network's ongoing development of infrastructure across the north of England and will involve replacing 500 metres of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to the customers in Leeds for years to come, the company said. The essential work will be carried out in several phases over a seven month period to minimise city centre disruption, and is scheduled for completion in February 2014. The first phase of the project is expected to take three weeks to complete and during this time it will be necessary to close the right hand bus lane at the bus station on Infirmary Street, the company added. Phase two of the project will commence mid-September and is expected to take five weeks to complete. In order to carry out this phase of the work safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to close one lane of traffic on King Street and there will be no left turn onto St Paul's Street. A rolling closure will be in place on St Paul's Street for approximately 10 weeks as work progresses from the junction with King Street in a westerly direction towards Central Street. Whilst there are restrictions in place, some parking will be available on St Paul's Street during this time. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the project.

Ofgem to Fine National Grid Gas Plc and Northern Gas Networks Limited for Failing to Attend Gas Escapes on Time
Dec 21 11
Ofgem announced its intention to fine National Grid Gas Plc and Northern Gas Networks Limited £4.3 million and £900,000 respectively for failing to meet mandatory targets for attending and assessing gas escapes on time last Winter. The timescales they have to meet for this are set out in the gas transporter licence. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is the gas safety regulator but Ofgem sets standards for how quickly gas companies must respond to gas escapes. Gas Distribution Network Operators (GDNs) have annual targets to respond to 97% of uncontrolled gas escapes within one hour, and 97% of controlled gas escapes within two hours. All GDNs have to report their performance against these targets to Ofgem each year.
