Coca-Cola India Private Limited Key Developments

Coca-Cola's India Investment Plan of $5 Billion by 2020 Remains Intact

Coca-Cola said its India investment plan of $5 billion by 2020 remains intact and the company is on course to achieving the target despite setbacks in the expansion of its Varanasi bottling plant. Coca-Cola has decided not to pursue the expansion of its bottling plant in Varanasi on grounds of inordinate delays in receiving environmental clearances for the $25-million project in Mehdiganj. On the launch, the new product was in line with its 2020 Vision. Initially, the product will be available on e-commerce platforms and outlets in south India. According to independent estimates, the non-alcoholic ready-to-drink (NARTD) beverage market is estimated at INR 70,000 million with sparkling beverages forming more than 60% of this market.

National Green Tribunal Lifts Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board Order Directing Closure of Coca-Cola

In a small relief for Coca-Cola, the National Green Tribunal on June 20, 2014 lifted a Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) order directing closure of the firm's bottling plant in Mehdiganj, Varanasi, for alleged flouting of environmental norms. The interim order will be subject to the final outcome of the dispute. The UPPCB on June 6, 2014 had directed closure of the plant on the ground that the plant's treatment system was not operated properly and that the company was exceeding its permitted capacity by raising production from 20,000 cases a day to 36,000. After the NGT order, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages has been permitted to produce soft drinks at its earlier permitted capacity of 600 bottles per minutes.
