PT Lion Mentari Airlines to Launch a Hybrid Airline in Malaysia in a Joint Venture with National Aerospace and Defence Industries Bhd

PT Lion Mentari Airlines will launch a hybrid airline in Malaysia in a joint venture with National Aerospace and Defence Industries Bhd (NADI). The new airline, named Malindo Airways, will commence operations in May 2013 with a fleet of 12 Boeing 737-900ER aircraft. Lion Air official said the air carrier will provide a hybrid product using aircraft with a two-class configuration 12 in business and 168 in economy. Moreover, the aircraft will have in-flight entertainment systems and in-flight connectivity. As per the agreement, NADI will own a 51% stake in the new airliner and Lion Air 49%. Lion Air has set order for five 787s for its premium carrier Batik Air. Now it will go to Malindo in 2015. Kirana said Lion Air is negotiating with Boeing to order an additional 10 number of 787.
