Alex Energy Inc. Idles Two Metallurgical Coal Mines in West Virginia and Cut 130 Jobs

Alpha Natural Resources Inc. unit Alex Energy Inc. idled two metallurgical coal mines in West Virginia and cut 130 jobs, the latest casualties of a depressed met coal market. The idling of the two mines impacts the company's Green Valley Plant and Green Valley Trucking operations. Higginbottom said 65 employees were offered a transfer within the Green Valley operating unit, and 10 were offered opportunities at other Alpha affiliate locations, bringing the net reduction to 130.

Environmental Groups Files Lawsuit Against Alex Energy, Inc

Three environmental groups filed a lawsuit against Alex Energy Inc. alleging selenium discharges from a West Virginia surface mine, the latest in a barrage of complaints filed against coal operators. The lawsuit, filed July 16 and entered into a docket July 18, alleges violations of the Clean Water Act from the No. 1 surface mine in Nicholas County. The Sierra Club, Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition and West Virginia Highlands Conservancy filed the suit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia.

Environmental Groups Files Federal Lawsuits Against Alex Energy Inc, Fola Coal Company LLC and Consol of Kentucky

Environmental groups filed federal lawsuits against three coal companies March 13, 2013, claiming that runoff from their mountaintop removal mining sites have polluted West Virginia waterways. The Sierra Club, West Virginia Highlands Conservancy and Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition filed the three lawsuits in federal court in Huntington. The groups accuse Alex Energy Inc. and Fola Coal Company LLC of contaminating water in tributaries of Twentymile Creek with sulfate and other harmful chemicals. The other suit alleges that Consol of Kentucky's Peg Fork mine discharges unlawful quantities of selenium into nearby streams. Selenium is a naturally occurring element that surface mining can release into waterways. In humans, high-level exposure can damage the kidneys, liver, and central nervous and circulatory systems. A bill making its way through the Legislature would allow the state Department of Environmental Protection to raise the allowable levels of selenium in lakes and streams. It also would order a study to determine acceptable levels of selenium specific to West Virginia. Consol was ordered to pay a civil penalty of nearly $270,000 in a settlement reached in December with state regulators concerning violations at its Peg Fork mine in Mingo County.
