Albertsons Settles Hazardous Waste Lawsuit for $3.3 Million
Jun 25 14
Albertsons grocery stores will pay more than $3.3 million to settle a lawsuit that alleged the chain improperly handled and disposed of hazardous waste at its stores. The suit, which was filed in Orange County Superior Court in May, affects all 188 Albertsons stores in California and two distribution centers. The company did not admit fault in the settlement. The suit was filed by 11 agencies, including the Orange County District Attorney's Office and agencies in Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Ventura and Los Angeles counties. Under the settlement, which was signed June 4 and served to Albertsons representatives, the company will pay $2.27 million in civil penalties, cover the costs of the investigation and provide funding for environmental projects. The hazardous waste included over-the-counter medicine, batteries, aerosol products, pool chemicals and other products that had expired, been damaged or otherwise could not be sold. According to prosecutors, employees threw out the items in dumpsters or took them to third-party processors who were not certified to receive hazardous waste.
