Joyent, Inc. Key Developments

Joyent, Inc. Expands Compute Product Line and Introduces Reserved Pricing

Joyent, Inc. announced the immediate availability of a broad expansion of its elastic compute service product line as well as reserved pricing plans and globally consistent pricing, allowing customers more flexibility and control to optimize on their price to performance value. With its new end-to-end elastic compute service, Joyent meets the demands of customers of any size, from mobile startup to Fortune 100 enterprise, offering more flexibility and control, while simultaneously delivering an easy migration path from and interoperability with other Cloud IaaS providers. As such, Joyent has launched several new instance types, which customers can obtain and boot in minutes, allowing fast up and down scaling as computing requirements change. The new instances fall into the following five families: Standard. Provides a balanced set of resources and a low cost platform that is well suited for a wide variety of applications. High Memory. Offers large memory sizes for high throughput applications, including database and memory caching applications. High CPU. Provides proportionally more CPU resources than memory (RAM) and are well suited for compute-intensive applications. High Storage. Delivers proportionally higher storage density per instance, and are ideally suited for applications that benefit from high sequential I/O performance across very large data sets. High Storage instances also provide high levels of CPU, memory and network performance. High I/O. Provides very high disk I/O performance and are ideally suited for many high performance database workloads. High I/O instances provide SSD-based local instance storage, and also provide high levels of CPU, memory and network performance. In addition, with the introduction of one- and three-year reserved capacity pricing options, Joyent customers can drive cloud costs down even further. With reserved capacity, customers can purchase the high-performance Joyent compute service with an upfront, one-time fee and receive a significant discount on the hourly charge for that instance over the contract term.

Joyent, Inc. Launches Apache Hadoop-Based Solution

Joyent, Inc. announced a new Apache Hadoop-based solution, built using the Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP), that allows companies to run enterprise-class Hadoop on the high-performance Joyent Cloud. Signifying Joyent's first entry into the big data landscape, this new Hadoop-based solution meets industry demand to reduce costs and dramatically decrease query response times. As measured by the software product development services company Altoros Systems, the following results were gleaned: Hadoop clusters on Joyent Cloud produced a nearly 3X faster disk I/O response time versus identically-sized infrastructure, Or, the solution allows companies to cut their infrastructure costs by two-thirds with the same response time. Running Apache Hadoop on Joyent accelerates response times of distributed and parallel processing and improves the scaling of Hadoop clusters executing intensive data analytics applications. Through the use of its operating system virtualization and CPU bursting technology, Joyent is able to extract better response times and deliver results to data scientists and analysts faster.
