AT&T and Fon Sign Strategic Global Wi-Fi Agreement
Sep 24 13
AT&T and Fon announced a global Wi-Fi roaming agreement that will give customers of both companies a broader and richer Wi-Fi experience as they travel the globe. Via the AT&T Wi-Fi International App, AT&T customers traveling abroad can now gain access to hundreds of thousands of Fon international hotspots. In turn, Fon network members will gain access to AT&T's Wi-Fi network, which includes more than 30,000 hotspots at popular restaurants, hotels, bookstores and retailers throughout the United States. The agreement covers smartphones and other Wi-Fi-enabled devices, which will connect seamlessly to select hotspots in both the AT&T and Fon networks. The AT&T Wi-Fi International App, which is available on iPhone, iPad and Android devices, lets AT&T customers on either the 300MB or 800MB AT&T Data Global Add-On package access up to 1GB of Wi-Fi each month at no additional charge.
Fon Partners with Deutsche Telekom AG to Create Germany's WIFI Network
Mar 4 13
Fon and Deutsche Telekom AG announced a partnership to build Germany's WiFi network, which will launch in the summer under the name WLAN TO GO. As Deutsche Telekom has 12 million broadband subscribers and more than 12,000 hotspots all around Germany, Deutsche Telekom's broadband subscribers just need to sign up to the Fon service and share the unused capacity of their internet connection with other users. By doing this, they get free access to millions of Fon hotspots all around the world. Sharing creates two networks - a private one, accessible only inside the home, and a public one shared with other members of the network. This is completely safe, and since the private network is always prioritized, there is no noticeable change in internet speed for those who choose to share.
KPN Partners with Fon to Give Customers Global WiFi Access
Jan 23 13
KPN has partnered with Fon to offer KPN customers access to WiFi hotspots in the Netherlands and to over 7 million WiFi hotspots abroad. With this step KPN solidifies its position as market leader in the public WiFi field. In the Netherlands, KPN customers will be able to share a portion of their own home bandwidth in exchange for free access on shared broadband connections of other KPN broadband customers in the Netherlands and Fon customers in other countries. A separate WiFi signal will be created for the part of the broadband connection that will be shared with other customers, which guarantees a safe home network for the individual KPN customer. The public WiFi network will enable access in and around houses where shared connections are operational. The public WiFi network therefor is complementary to KPN's mobile and fixed network with over 1,500 HotSpots in the Netherlands. KPN expects to test the WiFi network within the next half year. The commercial launch is planned for later this year.
