Nokia India Union Says No to Interim Deal
Mar 28 14
Workers at Nokia India factory will either remain with the Finnish handset manufacturer or Microsoft Corp, which has acquired Nokia globally, but will not accept any interim arrangement. The Nokia India factory near Chennai is at the heart of a INR 210,000 million income tax dispute between the company and the Government. This has stalled the transfer of the asset to Microsoft leaving over 8,000 workers at the factory in limbo. The Tamil Nadu Government has also slapped a sales tax claim of INR 24,000 million on the company. Tamil Nadu Government Sues Nokia on Tax Sops
Mar 22 14
The Tamil Nadu government has contended that Nokia claimed tax credits worth EUR 300 million (over INR 25,000 million) on exports when the company actually sold the devices in India. The company has moved the Madras high court challenging the state government's notice to claim EUR 300 million in taxes. Nokia has filed a writ to the Madras high court to contest a claim from the Tamil Nadu tax department, which has moved to assess sales tax on the export of devices from the company's Chennai facility. Nokia considers the claim to be completely without merit and counter to domestic tax laws.
