Twenty-Four Plaintiffs Sues CSX Corp., Norfolk Southern Corp. and Conrail

Twenty-four plaintiffs, including a dozen police officers who rushed to the scene of a November 2012 train derailment in Paulsboro, sued on May 13, 2013, alleging that the rail company's negligence caused the derailment, and that it downplayed the dangers of a chemical spill and failed to protect responders. As a result, the suit says, the plaintiffs have suffered ailments such as breathing problems, headaches, neurological disorders, and elevated blood pressure since the tanker carrying 23,000 gallons of vinyl chloride derailed Nov. 30, 2012. The suit, filed in Common Pleas Court in Philadelphia, names Conrail and its parent companies, Norfolk southern Corp. and CSX Corp., as defendants. Plaintiffs include 12 Paulsboro and Greenwich Township officers.

Fifty-Four Residents File Lawsuit Against Conrail and CSX

Fifty-four residents are sued Conrail and CSX over the Jefferson Street Bridge collapse and vinyl chloride leak. This news came as most of the remaining evacuees were allowed to return home and the first 911 calls reporting the accident were released. Seven of the 84 cars on a Conrail train derailed and the bridge over Mantua Creek collapsed Nov. 30, sending four tanker cars into the water below and releasing vinyl chloride- a gas used in making PVC plastics - into Paulsboro's air. The carcinogenic chemical was detected in Paulsboro's air for days following the incident, prompting authorities to evacuate more than 200 residents over 27 blocks in the 2.2-square-mile borough. The Cherry Hill and Philadelphia-based Cedar Law Firm and Williams Cukor Berezofsky, LLC filed suit against Conrail and CSX in Pennsylvania State Court on behalf of 54 Individuals from Paulsboro. It asks for damages arising from the vinyl chloride spill that sent scores of individuals to the hospital immediately following the bridge collapse.
