Sasol Mining Pty Limited reported audited earnings and production results for the six months ended December 31, 2012. For the six months, production volumes were down 1% compared to those of the prior year due to some challenging geological conditions as some collieries near the end of their life of mine.

The company reported operating profit of ZAR 2,287 million 41% higher than the prior year, excluding the once-off Ixia Coal transaction share-based payment expense of ZAR 565 million recognized in the prior year. Production volumes were in line with those of the prior year, despite industrial action and adverse geological conditions. The improved operating profit was supported by higher sales prices to Sasol Synfuels, offset by lower US dollar export coal prices, together with the weaker rand/US dollar exchange rate.
