Bell Aliant Inc. Invests $2 Million to Expand FibreOp Service Along Nova Scotia's South Shore

Bell Aliant Inc. is extending its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network to 3,500 homes and businesses in Chester and Mahone Bay, two historic villages along Nova Scotia's South Shore. The expansion also includes Chester Basin and parts of the Western Shore. Customers in Mahone Bay will be able to sign up for the service on August 30th and Chester will be available at the end of September. Bell Aliant is the only company in Atlantic Canada that delivers a dedicated fibre-optic line directly into each home and business, powering an unparalleled online and TV experience. Since 2010, the company has invested more than $125 million in Nova Scotia to make its FibreOP technology available to almost 330,000 homes and businesses. Bell Aliant Inc. reported earnings results for second quarter and six months of 2014. For the quarter, the company’s operating revenue was $683 million against $692 million a year ago. Adjusted EBITDA was $318 million against $327 million a year ago. Capital expenditures were $146 million against $157 million a year ago. Free cash flow was $131 million against $153 million a year ago. Net earnings were $72 million, up $6 million from the same quarter in 2013. The increase in net earning was driven by higher earnings in Bell Aliant GP, with lower finance and income tax expenses more than offsetting lower adjusted EBITDA and higher restructuring costs compared to the second quarter in 2013. Earnings per share and adjusted earnings per share were $0.32 and $0.39 respectively, compared to $0.29 and $0.39 in the second quarter of 2013.
For the six months, the company’s operating revenue was $1,358 million against $1,375 million a year ago. Adjusted EBITDA was $635 million against $650 million a year ago. Capital expenditures were $281 million against $285 million a year ago. Free cash flow was $104 million against $248 million a year ago.
