The Lubrizol Corporation Key Developments

The Lubrizol Corporation Begins Expansion of Surfactant Plant in Brazil

The Lubrizol Corporation has begun construction on a surfactant plant expansion in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Strategically located in Belford Roxo, the new unit is designed to meet the growing demand for personal and home care products in the Brazilian market. The estimated investment in the new plant totals more than $20 million and will feature some of the latest equipment in the industry.

LifeScience Polymers Unveils New Pharmaceutical Excipient

The Lubrizol Corporation announced that its LifeScience Polymers has introduced Pathway, a new pharmaceutical-grade excipient. As pharmaceutical companies face the challenge of the patent cliff, the development of new routes of administration for existing drug products is an important potential strategy they can use to help maintain the success of their product franchises. Pathway excipients help drug manufacturers achieve their goals of developing these novel, controlled-release drug products. LSP's medical-grade thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) has been used for decades in both short- and long-term devices such asventricular assist devices, vascular prostheses, tissue adhesives, skin wound dressings, as well as insulators for cardiac pacing leads and pacemaker headers designed to last many years. With the implementation of the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) quality system at Lubrizol's facility in Wilmington, MA earlier this year, this is the first time the company can offer pharmaceutical-grade TPU polymers in addition to medical-grade ones. "It is not often that someone can say they are introducing a new excipient into the drug development market," said Joey Glassco, Lubrizol LifeScience Polymers global market manager.

Lubrizol Introduces New Medical-Grade Polymer with Flame-Retardant Technology and Matte Finish

A new medical-grade thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) from The Lubrizol Corporation's LifeScience Polymers business is rolling out this year, marking the first time that a medical-grade TPU also offers flame-retardant properties. This new and innovative solution for medical devices is ideal for equipment that has direct contact with electronic connections such as touch screen monitors, pressure cuffs, EKG cables, sensor cables and more. Because Lubrizol's new TPU is flame-retardant, it reduces the risk of fire spreading, an especially critical feature in home care and medical applications where the growing use of electronics can mean an increased probability of equipment short-circuiting. In addition to being flame-retardant, the polymer is also medical-grade. Lubrizol's medical-grade TPUs offer distinct advantages including biocompatibility data, change notification management, record retention, as well as regulatory and product compliance support. The TPU has shown to be non-cytotoxic per ISO 10993-5 test requirements. The new TPUs will be part of the Tecothane(TM) product line and are offered in several grades: Tecothane(TM) TT-6575A TPU, Tecothane(TM) TT-6385A TPU, Tecothane(TM) TT-6390A TPU, Tecothane(TM) TT-6395A TPU and Tecothane(TM) TT-6350D TPU.
