Company Overview

BrightSource Energy, Inc., a solar thermal technology company, designs, develops, and sells proprietary systems to produce energy in utility-scale electric power plants in United States and internationally. The company’s systems use fields of tracking mirrors, known as heliostats, controlled by its proprietary software to concentrate sunlight onto a solar receiver/boiler unit to produce high-temperature steam. The steam produced in the solar receiver/boiler unit is used in a conventional steam turbine to produce electricity or in industrial applications, such as thermal enhanced oil recovery. It also acts as the system architect for the layout and optimization of the solar field; and provide...

BrightSource Energy Signs Joint Venture with Shanghai Electric

BrightSource Energy announced that it has signed a joint venture with Shanghai Electric to build utility scale solar thermal projects in China, which is quickly becoming the worldcs most important solar market. The proposed Qinghai Delingha Solar Thermal Power Generation Project, in Chinacs Qinghai province, envisions six 135 MW CSP tower plants. The first phase will include two 135 MW solar thermal plants. Construction of the first two plants is expected to begin in 2015 and be completed in 2017. Unlike the photovoltaic solar panels that are increasingly common on the roofs of homes and commercial buildings, solar thermal technology concentrates the suncs rays to boil water and generate steam. Solar thermal, also known as concentrating solar power, or CSP, is land-intensive, requires access to transmission lines and typically faces several environmental reviews and permitting hurdles before projects can be built.
