PotashCorp-Aurora Deploys Tropos Wireless Communications Network at Aurora, North Carolina Phosphate Mine and Processing Plant
May 22 12
Tropos Networks Inc. announced that PCS Phosphate Company Inc. has deployed a Tropos wireless communications network at its Aurora, North Carolina (PotashCorp-Aurora) phosphate mine. The outdoor network transports telemetry data from instrumentation on mining and processing equipment such as shovels, draglines, conveyors and feeders. Real-time telemetry data monitoring enables PotashCorp-Aurora to minimize unscheduled maintenance and increase uptime at its round-the-clock, seven-day-a-week operation. PotashCorp-Aurora mines and processes phosphate ore. The facility is the world's vertically integrated fertilizer enterprise. It is a supplier to the agriculture, animal nutrition, and industrial chemical markets. The plant site sits adjacent to the Pamlico River and began operating in 1964. It employs approximately 1,000 permanent and up to 550 contract workers. The Tropos network employs fixed mesh routers deployed around the mine's perimeter as well as mobile mesh routers mounted on mining equipment. It transports data collected by sensors on the mining equipment to the facility's operations center where the information is monitored and analyzed. By ensuring that equipment is operating within specified parameters and predictively determining the need for maintenance, PotashCorp-Aurora avoids unscheduled maintenance and costly downtime. In addition to equipment telemetry data, the network is used to communicate manufacturing process data and to support use of IP phones.
Guam Power Authority Selects Tropos Networks Inc. for Wireless Smart Grid Communications
May 17 12
Tropos Networks Inc. announced that Guam Power Authority has selected Tropos(R) as the network communications vendor for the utility's smart grid rollout across the island of Guam. Tropos and GPA have begun implementing the Tropos GridCom(R) network to support GPA's smart grid rollout in 2012. As part of GPA's overall smart grid project, the utility is implementing a reliable, multi-application Tropos GridCom network that meets their existing needs and future requirements as they move to a comprehensive smart grid deployment. GPA will use their Tropos GridCom network to backhaul smart meter data, automate switches and reclosers in their distribution system, provide connectivity for communicating faulted circuit indicators and deliver critical data to field workers. GPA selected the Tropos GridCom wireless communication system to achieve maximum benefit from its investment in AMI and other smart grid technologies. GPA's GridCom network will transfer data between smart meter data collectors and intelligent distribution automation devices in the field and smart grid application software located in GPA's corporate data center and its system control center.
Piedmont City School District Selects Tropos Networks Inc. and Information Transport Solutions, Inc. to Build a Wireless Broadband Communications Network
Feb 8 12
Tropos Networks Inc. and Information Information Transport Solutions, Inc. announced that they have been selected by the Piedmont City School District to build a wireless broadband communications network that will provide Piedmont K-12 students with wireless Internet connectivity. The wireless network, owned by ITS, will serve approximately 1,100 students, many of whom live in rural areas with no Internet access. The broadband connectivity is federally funded by an E-rate grant as part of the FCC's "Learning On-The-Go" wireless pilot program to increase students' off-campus mobile Internet connections. Piedmont City School District was one of 20 schools selected for the pilot project and the only one to utilize a wireless mesh network.
In addition to the E-rate grant, the citizens of Piedmont worked with the school district to supply 900 Apple(R) MacBook Pro laptops to students to help further their education. In the first quarter of 2012, ITS will deploy a Tropos(R) wireless broadband network, including 216 Tropos routers, over seven square miles. The wireless network will connect to the city's 1 gigabit per second fiber backbone. Through use of the new network, students will have many opportunities including keeping up with course credits for working students, participation in "digital summer school," and preparing for college.
