Smith's Food & Drug Centers Inc. and Union Resume Talks

Negotiations resume between Smith's Food & Drug Centers Inc. and United Food & Commercial Workers Local 1564 to replace a labor agreement that expired on June 7. The 2,200 workers in 25 New Mexico stores represented by the union agreed with the Salt Lake City-based chain to extend the current contract through Aug. 2. Local 1564 accused Smith's in a National Labor Relations Board complaint of negotiating in bad faith. The complaint says the company and union were scheduled to negotiate on consecutive days between June 2 and June 7 in order to reach agreement before the contract expired. In previous negotiations, the union agreed to huge concessions, including reduced holiday pay and reduced health benefits for newer employees to help Smith's compete.

Smith's Food & Drug Centers, Inc. Announces Executive changes

The Kroger Co. announced that Jay Cummins has been named as president of the Smith's Food and Drug Stores division. Mr. Cummins, 62, has been serving as president of Kroger's Mid-Atlantic division. He succeeds Mark Tuffin, who was named senior vice president of retail divisions in December. Mr. Cummins brings more than 40 years of retail experience to the company.

Fry's Food Stores of Arizona, Inc. and Smith's Food & Drug Centers, Inc. Ratify New Labor Agreement with UFCW Local 99

The Kroger Co. announced that associates working at Fry's Food Stores of Arizona, Inc. and Smith's Food & Drug Centers, Inc. have ratified a new labor agreement with UFCW Local 99. The contract covers more than 15,000 Fry's associates working in 121 stores in Phoenix, Tucson, and throughout the state of Arizona. It also covers 427 Smith's associates working in Kingman, Bullhead City, Ft. Mohave and Lake Havasu.
