Commonwealth Edison Company Key Developments

Commonwealth Edison Company Partners with CenturyLink Technology Solutions for Multi-Year Energy Efficiency Project

Commonwealth Edison Company has announced that it is working with CenturyLink Technology Solutions on a multi-year energy efficiency project to reportedly help the communications and IT services company reduce the energy use of its Chicago CH2 data center by 7.4 million kilowatt hours, or kWh, annually, or the equivalent of powering 800 homes. The project is part of ComEd's Smart Ideas for Your Business energy efficiency program, which provides financial incentives and technical assistance to ComEd customers to help them become more sustainable. Data centers require a great deal of electricity to both power and cool digital equipment. The Chicago area is a desirable location for data centers, given its central location and convergence of fiber optic networks combined with ComEd's top-performing electric reliability grid and Illinois' low-cost competitive energy market.

ComEd Opens Emergency Operations Center

ComEd announced increasing its staffing and opening its Emergency Operations Center, in advance of severe weather expected to enter its service territory. The storm brings the potential for heavy rain, lightning and high winds with gusts in excess of 50 miles per hour. ComEd is preparing field crews and employees to respond to potential power outages resulting from the forecasted weather.

ComEd Announces Customer Friendly Bill Design

ComEd announced customer friendly bill design. ComEd residential customers can expect to see their billing information presented in a format that's easier to read and understand. The new design is the result of feedback ComEd solicited from its customers to ultimately produce a billing statement designed by and for its customers. The new bill design will help customers understand their energy usage, so they can take steps to better manage their electric bills. Customers can expect for the information on the new statement to be organized in order of importance, with summarized usage and charges on the front, contact information and messages on the back, and color-coded sections throughout, making it easy to find the information most important to them. Also, to generate new and innovative bill designs, ComEd partnered with crowdSPRING, an online marketplace for creative services, to launch a global competition with a community of designers. The designers were tasked with incorporating feedback from ComEd customers on bill improvements to create and submit a mock-up of a redesigned bill. More than 280 designs were submitted, and in September, ComEd selected the top three designs that best resembled the details customers said they want most. ComEd continued to gather customer suggestions on the three designs to refine the mock-ups based on this feedback and produce the final billing statement, which went through additional testing with residential customers to ensure it met expectations.
